Circle of Seven Productions took the idea of "music videos sell CD's" and applied it to books. Book Trailers® are an example of the type of entertainment that can bring people back to books!

The Master and the Muses by Amanda McIntyre

Product Definition
  • Book Trailers® look like movie trailers, but advertise books in an entertaining way.
  • Book Teasers® are a shorter version, usually 30 seconds, taken from a Book Trailer®. These are often used as a "coming soon" video teaser for the trailer, or used as commercials on TV or in movie theaters.
  • Mini-teasers that are non-actor videos and use still photography, CGI, stock footage, sound and text.
  • Sound Scenes™ are audio scenes taken from a book and enhanced with audio effects.
  • Interview Trailers are video of author interviews interspersed with music and photos or footage.

Uses
  • Online video distribution has evolved into an incredible market. User-generated video is uploaded all over the internet and viewed by millions of people a day. Each of our products has a place in this new medium. According to the type of product, the genre and the purpose of the video as outlined by the client, COS Productions strategically places products in appropriate areas of the internet. Currently COS Productions has identified and utilizes 120 sites in which video can be placed.
  • Outreach - Appeal to those people who enjoy visual entertainment. The visual entertainment industries such as television, movies, games and even music, enjoy the vast reach that the visual medium can offer. Now, books can enjoy that outreach through a video synopsis of their book.
  • Sales and marketing enhancement tool. Get your book video out to sales teams and booksellers by putting it on a DVD or CD Rom, or sending the video online with a link to iFilm, YouTube or DailyMotion. Let them see your book!
  • Press interest – Because book video is new to many media industries you can use your video to attract the press and include in your press kit. As book video evolves and becomes more and more accepted as entertainment, many videos will stand out and be identified by the media.
  • B-Roll – This is what many television programs use to play while doing interviews. The author talks and their book video plays in the background. It is an exciting feature that can entice viewers to want to find out more, and can entice television shows to want to pick you up for interviews.
  • Book Signings – Play your video on your laptop or a portable DVD player while you do book signings. Even if you turn down the volume, or turn it off, this visual enhancement to your book can attract more people to your signing table. Can't make it to a signing? You can still be there! Send your DVD or CD Rom to the store to be played.
  • Commercials – Our products can easily be turned into traditional commercials. In fact, we have had many of our products on television, cable and in movie theaters. In 2005 one of our commercials won the prestigious Telly Award.
  • Website enhancement – Have an attention grabbing video on your homepage! We have one client who told us that her web traffic has increased approximately 600% since putting our videos on her site.
  • Soft sell -  As more and more people use the internet to shop, buy, and be entertained, etiquette becomes especially important. 'Buy my book' can be seen as ad; an enticement to buy. But, 'Check out my cool video!' is an invitation to enjoy something with you, instead of buy something from you. Our products can be emailed in a way that doesn't fill up someone's email box, but allows them to see the video from an email link, and then pass the video on to friends. The video can be used as a blog topic, talking about your book, enticing people to check out the book synopsis in video form. All of this drives people to your site, tells them about your book, but in a way that is not seen as an ad or a push to buy something from you.

Formats
  • Delivery Formats: Electronic - We have format options for clients to choose from. Flash, Quicktime, Windows Media Player and Real Time are all available. We recommend flash since it has an approximate 98% penetration rate, meaning that most people can use it. We can also upload it to MySpace or Grouper, allowing the client to cut and paste the code into his/her website easily.
  • Delivery Formats: Hard Copy- We have great deals on duplication to DVD or CD Rom.  For those who plan on using their video for television interviews, we can supply a Beta tape or a mini DV tape.  Audio copies can be sent to radio stations for you via the internet.
  • Video Production – COS Productions recognizes the need for a variety of production formats. We currently offer the following production formats-

Digital Video – This is the least expensive option.

High Def Video – HDV is one step up from Digital Video and is a popular medium for independent filmmakers. Though slightly more expensive than Digital Video, many consumers prefer the look.

High Definition – True HD, like what was used in some of the scenes of the new Star Wars Trilogy, is closer to a filmic look. This is more expensive, but it is a higher quality video.

Film – COS Production now offers film. You can have a top quality film commercial for as little as $7000. Our production team for film products is an award winning team. They have done music videos for many artists including many for Gloria Estefan.

Flash Animation – For authors who prefer a flash animation project.

Why do we need book video?

Society as a whole has evolved into visual beings. Publishing houses not only compete with each other, but with the next big blockbuster movie or video game. Where other entertainment industries are offering greater special effects or more realistic games, the book industry continues to use print ads and the occasional television author interview.

With the decline in book sales publishers advertise to a smaller group of readers. So, there are a great number of ads for a smaller number of consumers to view and consider. Soon, print ads are lost in a sea of nearly identical books ads.

The number of consumers who enjoy visual entertainment has grown. Technology has advanced many entertainment industries successfully. Now, the publishing industry has an opportunity to use that technology to promote reading.

Although some publishers may be willing to pay thousands of dollars for a video done on film, digital video is accepted by television stations, movie theaters, and is easier to download to the computer and far less expensive to use.

Some people are using flash video and creating book videos at home using text and still photography. Some amateurs can make effective videos and some run the risk of actually creating a video that has the opposite effect from what they were going for.

It isn't just being able to make a good video that's important. If you have a video and only use it on your site it is a gimmick. You may as well put up a print ad.

A Book Trailer® is a tool like any other marketing tool. You need to use it appropriately in order to get the desired effect.

There has been an increase of book commercials on television, but often they are simply print ads on TV. Consumers want to be romanced for their entertainment dollars. Moving print ads won't work as effectively as something that engages the viewer.

Many publishers have tried book commercials and readily admit defeat saying that readers don't watch TV. That simply isn't so. The industry applies antiquated marketing processes to a new technology instead of evolving with consumers.

Book videos are more engaging for the imagination of the consumer.  Instead of just looking at a book cover on television they're able to get a feel for what the book is about through a visual synopsis.

Today COS not only works with New York Times best selling authors, but also with booksellers and publishing houses. The Book Standard has created an opportunity, through the Book Video Awards to bring this medium to the forefront of the industry.

Book video is quickly becoming a staple in the marketing of books. Technology offers too may low cost marketing opportunities for the use of video. The evolution of entertainment as a whole demands we acknowledge video even in the book world.
